Folklore - Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a type of vinegar made from fermenting apples. The sugar in the apples is broken down by yeast and bacteria. It changes first to alcohol and then to vinegar. It is golden brown, much darker than vinegar.

While other vinegars are used primarily for cooking, apple cider vinegar is used more for healh reasons. It is said to have been used in ancient times, but it gained wider appreciation in the late 1950s with the book Folk Medicine: A Vermont Doctor’s Guide to Good Health, written by D.C. Jarvis, M.D.

Dr. Jarvis recommended that apple cider be mixed with honey for even greater benefits.

There is so much to say about apple cider vinegar! My purpose here in Folklore Health is to let you know something about it, give you some tips, and provide you with more online resoureces.

Acid Alkaline Balance
Many practitioners of alternative medicine teach that the body is in optimal health when there is an acid alkaline balance. Our blood is slightly alkaline, and our bodies follow suit. Much of the food that we eat raises the acid level to high. People who advocate an acid/alkaline balance (I'm one of them) believe that this intake of acid-producing food causes a variety of effects that are negative to our health. Apple cider vinegar helps to raise the alkaline level, surprisingly, because it is acidic.

Because of its acidity, apple cider vinegar should always be diluted in water. I put one tablespoon in my bottle of water every day.
Blood Pressure Preliminary studies suggest that the acetic acid in vinegar might help lower blood pressure.
Cholesterol In 2006, a study on rats showed that cholesterol levels were lowered.
Dandruff Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, usually 1/2 cup each.
Diabetes Some studies have shown that vinegar helps lower blood sugar levels.
Weight Loss Apple cider vinegar is thought to be a natural appetite suppresant.
