Excel Candy Store

Start Your Document
  1. Click Start / All Programs / Microsoft Office / Microsoft Excel.
  2. When Excel starts, look for two toolbars.
  3. If you only have one, click on the double right-arrows on the far right, and select Show Buttons on Two Rows.
  4. Click File / Save As /.
  5. When the dialog box displays, type CandyStore.
Enter the Text
  1. Click in cell A1.
  2. Type your name, with correct capitalization. Hit ENTER.
  3. Now you are in cell A2.
  4. Type Candy Store and then hit ENTER.
  5. Now you are in cell A3.
  6. Type Candy and notice that the words Candy Store have appeared in the cell. Delete the word Store and hit ENTER.
  7. Now you are in cell A4. Type M&Ms and hit ENTER.
  8. Now you are in cell A5. Type Snickers and hit ENTER.
  9. Now you are in cell A6. Type Butterfinger and hit ENTER.
  10. Now you are in cell A7. Type Kit Kat and hit ENTER.
  11. Now you are in cell A8. Type whatever is your favorite candy and hit ENTER.
  12. Now you are in cell A9. Type Totals and hit ENTER.
  13. Click Save, then click in cell B3. Now you are next to the word CANDY.
    Row 3 will be used for the headings for each day of the week.


Enter the Column Headings
The heading for the first column is already there. It is in cell A3 and it says Candy.
Now you will enter the headings for the columns for each day of the week.

BUT!! You will only have to enter the word Sunday, and then let Excel fill in the rest for you.
  1. Click in cell B3. Type Sunday.
  2. Move your mouse to the fill handle - that is the little black square in the bottom right corner.
  3. Hold down your left mouse button and start to pull the mouse to the right.
  4. As you drag, you will see the days of the week appearing in small yellow Tool Tip boxes.
  5. Drag until you see Saturday.
  6. Release the left mouse button.
  7. You will see the days of the week filled in from cells B3 to H3.

Format the Headings
  1. Select from A3 to H3.
  2. Select an easy-to-read font, a different size, and a different color.
  3. Be sure to pick a font that is easy to read, and a color that is not too bright.



Enter Formulas for Daily Sales
It is very helpful to know the following:
  • How much you sold in one day
  • How much you sold of one candy for the week
You do this by entering Formulas. In this case, you will enter the formula for the Sum.
Remember: All formulas begin with the =. This is just to the left of the Backspace Key.
  1. Click in cell A9. Type Total. Then hit the Right Arrow. You are in cell B9.
  2. Type your Formula. It goes like this:
    =sum(b4:b8) then hit Enter.
  3. Now we want to copy the formula to the other columns.
  4. Click in cell B9. Move your mouse to the Fill Handle, just like you did when you copied the days of the week.
  5. Hold down your left mouse button, and drag across until you get to Saturday. Release the mouse button.



Enter Formulas for Candy Totals
You have just entered the formulas for Daily Sales.
Now we want to know how many of each candy were sold in one week.

  1. Click in cell I3. Type Total. Hit Enter.
  2. Type your Formula. It goes like this:
    =sum(b4:h4) then hit Enter.
  3. Now we want to copy the formula to the other rows.
  4. Click in cell I3. Move your mouse to the Fill Handle, just like you did when you copied the days of the week.
  5. Hold down your left mouse button, and drag down until you get Row 9. Release the mouse button.



Enter the Sales Information for the Candy
  1. Click in cell B4. This is Sunday for M&Ms.
  2. Enter all of the data for all of the candies. Use the information below.
  3. Hit the Enter key after each entry. Notice that the cursor moves down one row.
  4. Be sure to click in the first cell of the next column when you have finished with one day.

Format the Totals
By now, you know how to select and format cells. Format the Total Column (Column I) and the Total Row (Row 9).



Inserting a Row

When you insert a row in Excel, the inserted row will always be above the cell containing the cell pointer.
We want to insert a new row above the one that now shows your favorite candy.
We will enter the information for another of your favorites
  1. Note the row that your candy is in. It should be Row 8.
  2. Click in Row 8.
  3. On the Menu, click Insert / Rows.
  4. A new row is inserted above your cell pointer.
  5. Note that your candy is now on Row 9.
  6. Enter any candy that you wish in Column A, and any amounts that you wish for each of the days.
  7. NOTE: Your formulas at the bottom will change to include the new row.
  8. Also NOTE: You must COPY the total formula for the candy (Column I), just like the other formulas in that column.
