Merging Cells Across a Row into 1 Cell
- Let's say that you would like to put a title in your table.
The cells are really too small to fit a long title, so you can "merge" them together.
This will create one large cell that has room for a title.
- Select all the cells in the first row.
- Click Table / Merge Cells.
- Now you have one long cell that spans all of the cells below it.
Merging Cells Up and Down a Column into 1 Cell
- Let's say that you would like to put a large picture in your table along the left-hand side.
You can merge them together, just like merging rows across. This will create one large cell that has room for a picture.
- Select all the cells in the first column.
- Click Table / Merge Cells.
- Now you have one long cell that spans all of the cells to the right of it.
Placing Borders and Shading
Borders are the lines that go around the cells.
Shading is the color that is used to fill the cells.
- Select the cells that you want to format
- Click Format / Borders and Shading
- The Borders and Shading dialog box is displayed.
Note that there are 3 tabs at the top:
Borders, Page Border, Shading
We will be working with Borders and Shading
- Borders - you can put borders around one cell, any number of cells, or all the cells.
- Shading - you can shade one cell, any number of cells, or all the cells.
- Remember to check the box in the lower right-hand corner:
- It can say TEXT, PARAGRAPH, CELL, or TABLE
- Be sure that you select EXACTLY what you want to format.
