Feature to Notice on the Toolbars
There are many buttons that have a down-arrow next to them.
The one that you use the most is probably the FONT tool, which by default says Times New Roman.
The down-arrow next to a tool indicates that there are selectable options in a list.

The Standard Toolbar
This is found directly beneath your menu. It contains icons which represent different functions.
As you move your mouse directly over an icon and pause, a small rectangle appears, giving you the name of the icon. This is called a Tool Tip and is great help - provided that you know what the word means in the first place.
Toolbar Options
New Start a new document. Meaning, you have not created this document before.
Open Open an existing document. This document will have been Saved in the past.
You Saved it, and, hopefully, assigned a meaningful name to the file.
Save Saves your document using the existing name. More specifically, it Saves it with the name under which it was previously opened.
Another Save option, Save As, does not appear by default on the Standard Toolbar.
What is the difference between Save and Save As?
The Save As command displays the Save As dialog box, enabling you to select a specific folder in which to save your file, and to enter a specific filename for that file.
Print nts on the printer. Allows you to set margins, page layout.
Print Preview View your document on the screen as it will look printed - saves TONS OF PAPER
Spell Check Checks the spelling of your document
Cut Takes whatever you have selected, puts in on the CLIPBOARD, and REMOVES THE ORIGINAL from where it was
Copy Takes whatever you have selected, puts in on the CLIPBOARD, and LEAVES THE ORIGINAL where it was
Paste Takes the information from the clipboard and puts it in your document wherever your cursor is
Format Painter Copies the formatting of text
Undo Otherwise known as OOPS! - un-does the last thing that you did
Redo Re-does your undo
The remaining tools are kind of "special" - they allow you to create columns, tables, to convert to HTML (internet) documents, to import back and forth from Word to Excel.

One tool is very commonly used. It is the Zoom button.
It allows you to change your view of your document, to move closer in, seeing the objects and text more clearly but less of the entire page, or see more of the whole page, getting an ideas of its overall appearance, but not reading the text as clearly.
The Zoom button is a Drop-Down box - that is, there is a small arrow on its right - clicking this will activate a list of possible selections.
When you start, the system is set at 100% - as the number goes up, you move closer in to your document; as the number goes down, you move further away.
