What Is Social Networking?
When we think of networking, we picture a group of people with similar interests getting together. They share ideas and work with each other to solve problems. They set up meetings and events.

Social networking is very similar, but is done online.

People meet online for every conceivable reason - from crochet patterns to zoology, people find others with interests they share. The internet has made networking very easy and very widespread - your physical location doesn't matter at all!

Facebook is THE social network. Create an account, set up a simple profile, and invite friends or join existing groups. You can upload pictures and videos, link to websites that you like, play games, advertise your products or services.

What's the Scary Part?

Despite all of the warnings about posting private information, or hateful words, or disparaging remarks about other people, people are still posting whatever they feel in the current moment, without regard for the possible consequences. It is very possible that someone who doesn't like you very much to post horrendous comments about you. Oh well! That happens IN REAL LIFE as well.

But there's more. Your information can be viewed very easily. A simple search will find you. Now, prospective employers can, and will, search for you on Facebook to learn more about you. They will read your posts, look at your wall, and use that information to help them determine whether or not they want to hire you.

So, what is the message? It's exactly the same as the message we all knew (but didn't like) when we were kids:
If you wouldn't say it in front of your mother, don't post it!
